Inviting Entries for the Parag Honour List 2019

For more than a decade Parag has been working to catalyse the children’s literature sector in India. Parag has supported the publication of 700+ titles in 9 Indian languages reaching more than 40 million readers. Parag supported books have original and contextual stories for children growing up in a multilingual and multicultural world. To nurture the sector, Parag launched the Riyaaz Academy for Illustrators in 2015 to train young illustrators to illustrate children’s books. The Big Little Book Award recognizes significant contribution by Indian authors and illustrators. Parag has worked with multiple children’s publishers, authors and illustrators in various capacities, supported writing and illustration workshops and created platforms for discourse on children’s literature.

One gap that has been highlighted in recent times is the lack of a comprehensive curated list of good quality children’s books that libraries, teachers, parents can refer to while procuring children’s books. To fill this gap, Parag will be publishing an Annual Honour List. The list will comprise outstanding books of that year with details about each book. This list will be created with careful screening and reviews will be done by an independent jury. Parag will also promote the List among schools, libraries and parents and in book fairs with the sole purpose of promoting reading for pleasure.

Booklist on Mental Health and Wellbeing

Children’s literature is an important means of imaginative engagement not just in promoting overall growth and development, but also has a critical role in wellbeing. Children’s literature has a role to play in helping children talk about a range of issues such as gender, caste and class. Literature can help children engage respectfully and dialogically on such sensitive issues building their perspective which is so important in the pluralistic context of India today.
