बाबरी मस्जिद के ढहाए जाने के बाद भोपाल शहर में देश के अन्य भागों की तरह साम्प्रदायिकता के नाग ने फन उठाया। गाँठ में लिखित विवरणों के बीच मौखिक बयान भी दर्ज किये गए हैं। इसमें एक स्वाभाविक आपसदारी के छिन्न भिन्न होने के प्रत्यक्ष साक्ष्य मिलते हैं। ऐसी हिंसा के तुरत और दूरगामी प्रभाव एक समाज को ऐसे तोड़ते हैं कि दोबारा शुरुआत के बाद भी एक गाँठ बनी रहती है।
काले सफ़ेद रेखा चित्रों से अलग लोगों की आवाज़ों को डिज़ाइन और चित्रों के माध्यम से ऐसे पेश किया गया है कि उनकी सच्चाई झलकती है। चित्र बहुत सी सूक्ष्म दृष्टि से आम ज़िन्दगी के उन पहलुओं को पकड़ते हैं जो साम्प्रदायिकता की हिंसा में ध्वस्त होते हैं।
यह किताब खिचड़ीपुर मोहल्ले और वहाँ के बाशिंदों का एक सजीव दस्तावेज़ है—उनकी ही आवाज़ में। किरदार, उनके दुख–सुख और रोज़मर्रा की बयानगी बिना किसी परत या सजावट के सामने आती है। गाज़ीपुर के कूड़ा पहाड़ के पास बसे रिहायशी इलाके में रहने वाले बच्चों की नज़र से शहर, मोहल्ला और उसका सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक जगत खुलता है। लेखकों की विशेषता यह है कि वे अपने ही परिवेश से दूरी बनाकर उसे साफ़, बारीक और ईमानदार ढंग से रेखांकित करते हैं।
एक सत्य घटना पर आधारित यह मार्मिक कहानी इंसान और कुत्तों के बीच पनपने वाले प्यार के सरल-सपाट विवरण से दिल को छू लेती है।
जैसे कि कई सड़क के कुत्ते होते हैं, रामू जिजीविषा का प्रतीक है और पाठक को अपना बना लेता है। लेखक की कामकाजी व्यस्तताओं से समझौता कर, वह एक मूँगफली बेचनेवाले लड़के के पास भी समय बिताता है। जीवन की परिस्थितियाँ लेखक को गाँव वापिस ले जाती हैं और लौटने पर रामू उन्हें नहीं मिलता। पर उसकी याद उनके और पाठक के दिल में स्थाई जगह बना लेती है। लेखन शैली तथा चित्रांकन दोनों ही इस कहानी के सूक्ष्म भाव को यूँ पकड़ते हैं कि पाठक देर तक उस दुनिया में बना रहता है।

This is certainly a feel-good book but fortunately does not hit you on the head with a do-good message. A simple story, told from the perspective of Tenzin, a young monk, it has a good mix of adventure, encounters with the powers-that-be and beautiful descriptions of nature and animal life in Arunachal Pradesh. The illustrations are tasteful and add to the ambience of the place.

The narrator’s voice is earnest, and the stories paint a vivid picture of Amma’s childhood. The drawings are exquisite and have a dream-like quality where one is not sure where fable ends and truth begins.
