हमारे गाँव में रामलीला क्यों नहीं होती? इतनी दूर ठंड में किसी और गाँव में क्यों जाना पड़ता है रामलीला देखने? नौ साल की गोपु को अपनी इस सहज जिज्ञासा का कोई सीधा जवाब अपने बड़ों से नहीं मिलता। बस यही जानने की धुन में वह तरह-तरह से लोगों से बात निकलवाने का प्रयास करती रहती है, कभी अपने पुलिस पापा को मस्खा लगाती है तो कभी अपने दोस्त के साथ छानबीन में लग जाती है। गोपु और उसके पापा के बीच का बेकल्लुफ़ रिश्ता, दादी और अन्य किरदार और उत्तराखंड के गाँव के जीवन का जीवंत चित्रण इस लघु उपन्यास को और भी दिलचस्प बनाता है।

कितना मज़ा आता ऐसे ही बैठकर एक चिड़िया या किसी भी पक्षी को फुदकते, अपना काम करते देखने में। इस छोटी सी कहानी में जब एक जलमुर्गी और उसके चूज़े लेखक के घर में घुस आते हैं तो कोई बहुत बड़ी बात नहीं होती। पर कहानी का अंत बहुत दिलचस्प है। एक ऐसी कहानी जो आपको याद रहेगी। बारीक चित्रांकन कहानी को विस्तार देता है। चूज़ों की हरकतों को कोमलता से हल्के रंगों में अंकित किया गया है।
