The ‘big book’ format perfectly suits the detailed and charming illustrations. Author and Illustrator Deepa Balsavar’s detailed illustrations have potential for much discussion and sharing of experiences.
The murky and slightly mysterious illustrations draw you into young Gopu’s hazardous journey across a bustling city. Only at the end do you realise why his journey is made up of sounds, smells and precisely measured steps.
This sweet, simple, utterly believable story has a denouement that is breathtaking in its ingenuity. Author Mamta Nainy’s little Lila and her heart-felt dilemma are vividly visualized by illustrator Habib Ali. This familiar and funny and tender picture book will resonate with readers of all ages.
You may not understand why the child on the front cover of this book hangs upside down. Illustrator Shubham Lakhera aims to make the reader wonders why in the same way that Mini Shrinivasan’s protagonist with Down’s Syndrome doesn’t understand why her class fellows behave the way they do with her. This picture book shines a light on the nature of some special children even as it helps readers understand them.
This looks like a picture book but behind the cover is a mighty important theme. Asha Nehemiah has touched upon domestic abuse in a moving and direct manner. Aindri Chakraborty too enters into this theme with chilling pictures. And yet, the story is written with hope even though there might not be a final solution. That too is real. Teachers, librarians and parents must help the young reader navigate this book with care.
जानी मानी हस्तियों के बचपन के बारे में इस तरह से लिखी गयी है जैसे आत्मकथा लिखी जाती है। शैली एकदम सहज, बोधगम्य, और रोचक। संगीत, विज्ञान, सिनेमा, साहित्य, पक्षी-विज्ञान आदि क्षेत्रों से बड़ी हस्तियों के बचपन चुने गए हैं। बड़ों के बचपन को ज़रा भी रूमानियत से नहीं देखा गया है। लगभग हर बचपन में ऐसी कई अप्रिय बातें भी हैं जो आम तौर पर व्यक्ति छिपाने की कोशिश करता है। बड़े होने की प्रक्रिया में इस किताब का किसी युवा पाठक को मिल जाना एक सुखद और प्रेरणादायक अनुभव सिद्ध होगा।
बिक्सू’ आवासीय विद्यालय में पढ़ने वाले झारखंड के एक ग्रामीण बालक की कहानी है। बिक्सू पढ़ते हुए पाठक संवेदनात्मक और बौद्धिक स्तर पर समृद्ध होंगे ऐसा कई कारणों से लगता है। बिक्सू की कहानी में एक तरफ अगर स्थानीय रंग गहरे हैं तो दूसरी तरफ यह कथा सार्वभौमिक कथाभूमि पर भी एक लकीर खींचती चलती है। यह कथा जितना बाहर चलती है उतना ही भीतर भी। मुख्य पात्र की स्मृतियों और मानसिक द्वंद्वों को भाषा, चित्र और ले ऑउट डिजाइन सभी स्तरों पर अभिव्यक्त करने की कोशिश की गई है।
यह कहानियाँ किशोर-दृष्टि से बुनी गयी हैं जहाँ साधारण घटना भी अर्थवान बन जाती है, जैसे ट्रेन की यात्रा या बगीचे में अमरूदों की चोरी जो जीवन के बड़े मूल्यों की ओर संकेत करती हैं। इनकी विशेषता यह है कि यहाँ कथानक, पात्र और भाषा सब आस पास के जीवन के हैं। और हर कहानी हमें बेहतर इन्सान बनाती है, हालाकि ये कहीं भी सायास उपदेशात्मक नहीं हैं। कहानियाँ मज़ेदार भी हैं और अंत तक ध्यान बाँधे रखती हैं। चित्र स्थितियों को उभारते हैं और रंग अलग से ध्यान नहीं खींचते।
