इक्कीसवीं सदी हिन्दी बाल साहित्य के लिए नई बयार और नई भोर का उजास लेकर आई है। यह एक अनोखी, अभूतपूर्व और ऐतिहासिक घटना है कि हिन्दी के दिग्गज लेखकों ने बच्चों के लिए लिखने की शुरूआत की। आज चौथाई सदी बीतते-बीतते हिन्दी के बड़े लेखकों द्वारा बच्चों के लिए भी लिखने की एक परम्परा कायम हो चुकी है। इस परम्परा में एक प्रखर, उजली, गहरी, संवेदनशील आवाज़, लेखक, कथाकार, इतिहास के मर्मज्ञ, सम्पादक, संस्कृतिकर्मी प्रियंवद की है।
बच्चों के लिए एक से एक नायाब किताबें लिखकर प्रियंवद ने हिन्दी बाल साहित्य में जैसा अनोखा वितान खड़ा कर दिया है, वह अन्यतम है। उनका ‘नाचघर’ उपन्यास किशोर-वय के प्रेम और उधेड़बुनों की रोमांचित कर देने वाली दास्तान है। यह एक बड़े लेखक के हाथों ही संभव है कि वह ऐसा रच पाए जिसमें बच्चे रच बस सकें और उन्हें उन्हीं रचनाओं में वही साहित्यिक आस्वाद तब भी मिले जब वे बड़े हो जाएँ, वयस्क हो जाएँ। रचनाशीलता की यही ऊँचाई प्रियंवद के बाल साहित्य को एक अलग मुकाम पर खड़ा करती है।
वे तीन घण्टे की उम्र के बच्चे की कब्र को कहानी में दर्ज़ करते हैं। वे मार दी गईं चिड़ियों की संख्या को दर्ज़ करने वाली बूढे़ की कहानी कहते हैं। वे एक हुनर के अंतिम कारीगर ‘मुन्ना बुनाई वाले’ के नहीं रहने पर, पिता के हुनर को जीवित रख रहे बेटे की कहानी कहते हैं। ‘मिट्टी की गाड़ी’ और ‘इश्क का माता’ संग्रहों की उनकी कहानियाँ पाठक की स्मृति का हिस्सा बन जाती हैं।
प्रियंवद जीवन की उदासी के लेखक हैं। वे धरती के सबसे गरीब और असहाय लोगों के लेखक हैं। साम्प्रदायिकता, हिंसा, पर्यावरण संकट, क्षरित होती हुई मनुष्यता जैसे गम्भीर मुद्दों पर जीवन की गहराईयों से उठती भाषा में ऐसी मार्मिक कहानियाँ कहते हैं कि किशोरों को उनमें निहित उदात्त जीवन मूल्यों से प्यार हो जाए।
प्रियंवद कथा के साथ कथेतर के भी विरल साहित्यकार है। ‘इकतारा बोले’ और ‘सिकन्दर के दस सवाल’ उनकी ऐसी सुरुचिपूर्ण किताबें है कि इन्हें प्राथमिक और माध्यमिक कक्षाओं के पाठ्यक्रम का हिस्सा बनाया जाना चाहिए। इन किताबों में बच्चों को इतिहास के प्रति रोमांचित कर देने का सामर्थ्य है।
हिन्दी बाल साहित्य को उनकी यह विपुल देन ऐतिहासिक ही कही जाएगी।

Such profuse writing in Hindi children’s literature can only be considered historical.
